The 11th of March 2011 rewinds back to the 2004 Indian Ocean Earthquake and Tsunami which occurred on Sunday, 26th of December 2004 wiping off 227,898 people from existence as per the US Geological Survey.

The 2004 Indian Ocean Earthquake was an undersea mega-thrust earthquake with an epicentre off the west coast of Sumatra, Indian Ocean.

With a magnitude of between 9.1 and 9.3, the 2004 Indian Ocean Earthquake is the largest ever recorded on a seismograph and with the longest duration of around 8.3 to 10 minutes causing the entire Earth to vibrate as much as 1 cm. The worldwide community, as humanitarian aid, donated more than $14 Billion. This disaster highlighted the need for a Tsunami Warning System.

The catastrophic calamity of 2004 came back on the 11th of March to slam into the North-Eastern Japan. Two terrifying minutes of the most powerful earthquake ever recorded in Japan shook apart homes and buildings followed by a devastating Tsunami.  With a far inland reach, the huge waves filled with massive surge of debris, swept away buildings, cars and ships. I have been reading the newspapers outlining this disaster, and the concluded figure of death is 1,800 and 10,000 missing. On dawn, the damage caused by the Tsunami and Earthquake became clearer and the massive destruction can be seen.

Below are some striking pictures of what the calamity left behind:

The photos are indeed shocking. After the Tsunami surpassed, Japanese rushed to repair the failed cooling systems at the neighboring nuclear power plants. This remain a fear yet for the Japanese as the leftover radioactive materials will continue to produce and emit intense heat for one or two days. The path of death left by the 23-foot tsunami has had a psychological trauma on the Japanese, economic downturn, ecological disturbance and a big reliance on humanitarian aid. I was reflecting on this calamity and it is worth to advise not to take for granted anything in life. We never know the instance when life may deceive us. This disaster has rendered us thoughtful and urges us to ponder upon many aspects of life. We are all equally at risk as calamities are unavoidable.

Further to this deplorable happening, I would suggest only one thing – Let’s pray!

Let’s pray for the dead to rest in peace and for a safe living in the near future. Let’s heartily ask God to protect us while we atone for our sins. It’s a process of recovery – we learn from what happen. The deadly Earthquake and Tsunami can hit again in any part of the world. Let’s pray for the welfare of Mother Earth.
